CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT

Felipe parked down the street from Amarissa Garcia’s apartment building. He did not know whether a scout had spotted him or not. He kept himself alert for any sign of Leon Herrera. He did not see Amarissa. She had probably already left to visit her mother in prison. What a life, he thought sadly. He tried not to think of the child Amarissa carried.

Luisa’s words rang in his mind, but she was wrong. Chance was not the last witness. He was the only one who had not withdrawn his statement, but Victor and Hortensia Govea, and Pia Zaragoza, the cleaner, had all witnessed the murder. The girl across the platform, who had slipped away before the police had been called, was a witness too. He wondered if she had worked as a prostitute, if Los Sanguinitos would track her down before he managed to, just as they had with Tito.

If they could, then they would track down Constanza too. Now that the CCTV tape was being played on the news channels it would not take long for them all to be identified.

Felipe thought about the Prosecutor’s Office. Someone there was influencing the case. Luisa might deny that any of her superiors would, but it was the only explanation that he could accept for why they had refused to file charges against Leon in the first place. Now the witnesses were dropping, and the security footage would probably be inadmissible in court after being shown hourly on all the news channels.

There was something, though, Felipe thought. He had to get answers from Leon. He needed to know why Teo had been killed. Had he found out that Leon was gay and threatened to out him? Was Amarissa even right in her assertions that he was?

Felipe wanted to make sure Leon stopped going after the witnesses. He thought of Constanza and Chance. He wondered if he could drop the investigation into Teo’s death if it meant sparing their lives.

He straightened in the driver’s seat. A hooded figure marched down the street. The shoulders were broad, his stride powerful, and he was about the right height. He could not see his face, but he was sure it was Leon. He did not appear on edge, but he glanced over his shoulder to check he was not being followed. Perhaps something had him spooked. It was Leon.

Felipe waited until he had gone inside the building, before he opened his car door and crossed over the road, giving him a minute head start. He could not hear footsteps in the stairwell as he crept up the stairs.

The door to Amarissa’s apartment was closed when he approached.

Felipe imagined Leon inside. Had he come back just to pick up a few things and sneak away again, or was he here to put his feet up knowing his girlfriend was out for a few hours?

He had a gun on his hip, but he had no back-up. Felipe wondered if he should call Henrique and give his location. Before he could unclip his phone from his belt, the front door opened.
